TransTel Group
Inc. announces a cost-effective solution with low inherent
operating costs for transmitting vehicle location and dispatch
information.
The VLM-100
vehicle location module transmits vehicle location information
as well as voice and data communication between dispatch center
and vehicle. The product is offered with a suitable software
interface for conventional mapping software. The position,
speed, direction, and vehicle operating parameters can be
displayed for each vehicle or all vehicles can be shown on
a master display.
The VLM-100
uses digital cellular technology for data transmission and
communication. For example, using any of the voice channels
in a GSM cellular system, the dispatch center can contact
the vehicle, or the vehicle operator can contact the dispatch
center by using a hands-free accessory. In an emergency, the
driver can press a button to launch a 911-call.

The VLM-100
is relatively small at approximately 6 x 4 x 1 inches. A simple
universal metal bracket facilitates mounting below or above
the dash of a vehicle and within easy reach of the driver.
The VLM-100 is powered from the vehicle’s 12-volt dc
system. Externally accessible fuses and electrically protected
antenna connections are standard. The unit is designed to
withstand the range of temperatures and voltage surges that
are typically encountered in commercial vehicles.
A standard serial
connector is available for programming and maintenance operations.
It is also possible to transmit selected maintenance parameters
together with location data. The serial port can also be used
to connect to a laptop or remote terminal to download work
orders or other information from a dispatch center.

Voice communication
with a dispatch center can take place while vehicle location
data are being collected. The transmission rate of location
data can be adjusted to meet the requirements of different
customers. The monthly cost of transmitting vehicle data is
estimated at significantly less than ten dollars per vehicle
without applying discounts for larger fleets.
Since 1989 TransTel
Group designs and manufactures quality equipment for wireless
access to the public switched network. The design of the VLM-100
builds on the expertise and experience that TransTel has gained
in designing and manufacturing remote telemetry and cellular
backup equipment during the last decade.
